About Lisa S. Gardiner
Lisa S. Gardiner is a science writer, educator, and scientist. She’s the author of the award-winning book, Tales from an Uncertain World: What Other Assorted Disasters Can Teach Us About Climate Change. Her second nonfiction book, Reefs of Time: What Fossils Reveal about Coral Survival, will be published by Princeton University Press in spring 2025.
By writing, she aims to help curious readers learn about how our planet works, the animals with whom we share the world, and how our actions affect climate, oceans, and ecosystems. Through journalism (short news articles, features, and explainers) she tells stories of environmental science research and interesting animals and ecosystems. Writing and editing content for science education websites, she helps people of all ages learn about topics like climate change and extreme weather. And with book projects, she takes deep dives into science questions with a narrative nonfiction style. In addition to writing, Lisa teaches workshops and works with project teams to create learning resources like K-12 science curriculum, games and videos for informal science learning, and science museum exhibits. She has developed graphics for museum exhibits, illustrations for books, and science comics. Before she moved entirely into freelancing, she led the Mixed Media Learning team at the UCAR Center for Science Education where she managed projects funded by the National Science Foundation, NOAA, and NASA. In the past, Lisa researched fossil coral reef ecology. She holds a PhD in geoscience (with a focus on paleoecology) from the University of Georgia, an MFA in nonfiction writing from Goucher College, and an BA in geology and marine science from Smith College. Her writing has appeared in Scientific American, bioGraphic, Nautilus, Inside Energy, Science Friday, Hakai Magazine, The Atlantic, the documentary Saving My Tomorrow, and throughout UCAR’s education websites, among other places. |
